Alpha Omega Alumni Association Announces 2023 AO Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony


[Crete, Nebraska] - The Alpha Omega Alumni Association is thrilled to announce the 2023 AO Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, celebrating outstanding individuals who have made indelible marks on our fraternity, Doane University, and society at large. This prestigious event will take place on Friday, September 29th, 2023, in The Nyrop Great Hall at Doane University during the 2023 Doane University Homecoming weekend.


The ceremony will commence with a cocktail reception at 4:00 pm, followed by the presentation at 4:30 pm. We extend a warm welcome to all AOs and their families to join us in honoring these remarkable individuals.


The distinguished inductees of the 2023 AO Hall of Fame are as follows:


Hugh Butler - Founder of the Alpha Omega fraternity and a three-term United States Senator representing the State of Nebraska from 1940 to 1954. Senator Butler played a pivotal role in significant historical events, including declarations of war on Nazi Germany, the implementation of the Marshall Plan to restore Europe, and the positioning of Alaska and Hawaii for statehood in 1959. Additionally, he served as Doane's Chairman of the Board of Trustees for an impressive 25 years, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the college during the Great Depression and lean enrollment years of WWII. Mr. Butler will be posthumously inducted with the Legend Award.


Don Nyrop - A World War II Lieutenant Colonel and aviation pioneer, Mr. Nyrop held the position of Chairman of the Civil Aeronautics Board, appointed by President Harry Truman. He also served as the CEO of Northwest Airlines and was a dedicated member of the Doane College Board of Trustees. Mr. Nyrop will be posthumously inducted with the Legend Award.


Chuck Sukovaty - Recognized for his exceptional Service to the Fraternity, Chuck Sukovaty has consistently demonstrated unwavering dedication to the Alpha Omega brotherhood.


Kenneth Fridrich - Kenneth Fridrich is acknowledged for his long-standing dedication and outstanding service to Doane University, contributing significantly to the institution's growth and success.


Thomas Mangelsen - A world-renowned wildlife photographer with an impressive portfolio that includes PBS Nature, BBC Natural World, and National Geographic. Mr. Mangelsen's work as the cinematographer for the television documentary "Flight of the Whooping Crane" earned him an Emmy nomination. He will be inducted with the Lifetime Achievement award.

The Alpha Omega Alumni will also be hosting a tailgate during the Doane Football game on Saturday September, 30th, followed by the traditional AO Homecoming Social at the Crete Airport Hangar with live music from 80’s cover band, AM/FM. The social is open to the public (must be 18+).
